BASKETBALL RECRUITING BY CHRIS BALAS M ichigan landed its 2016 point guard in Lima (Ohio) Senior 's Xavier Simpson (5‑11, Rivals.com's No. 87 overall player nationally), and barring something unforeseen the standout likely caps the four‑man re‑ cruiting class. Big men Jon Teske (7‑0, No. 109 prospect in the senior class) of Medina (Ohio) High and Austin Da‑ vis (6‑10, three‑star) of Onsted (Mich.) High will man future frontcourts, while Pickerington (Ohio) Central's Ibi Watson (6‑5, unrated) takes the shoot‑ ing guard scholarship. Simpson's pledge puts the Wolver‑ ines at 14 scholarship players — one over the limit of 13 — for the 2016‑17 season, meaning someone will have to prep or attrition will have to occur to make room. Davis has been mentioned as a possible prep candidate, though he's consistently said he'd like to come in the 2016 class and has been working hard on his game to make that happen. U‑M coaches are still watching a few 2016 prospects, but there are caveats and the main target is Highland (Utah) American Fork High small forward Brendan Bailey (6‑7, No. 49 nationally). Michigan head coach John Beilein re‑ cently saw him, but Bailey — the son of former North Carolina State star and NBA player Thurl Bailey — is plan‑ ning a mission and won't join a pro‑ gram until 2018. He does have a Michi‑ gan visit planned for Sept. 26. The focus on the 2017 class has taken priority in the last several weeks, and U‑M has emerged as an early favorite for one prospect. Assistant coach LaVall Jordan was in Milwaukee Sept. 9 to see combo guard Jordan Poole (6‑4, Rivals.com's No. 104 junior nationally), who seems to be emerging as a prime U‑M target in the junior class. The Rufus King High standout saw Drake and Northwestern coaches join U‑M on the first day college coaches could get back out and evaluate play‑ ers at their high schools. He holds of‑ fers from Illinois (having visited twice), Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Auburn, Memphis and Marquette, among oth‑ ers, and is hearing the most from Mich‑ igan, Northwestern, Indiana, Missouri,   BASKETBALL RECRUITING Michigan Moves On To 2017 Milwaukee Rufus King High junior shooting guard Jordan Poole, Rivals.com's No. 104 player in the class of 2017, is expected to visit Michigan this fall.
