INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Student Athlete Of The Month Field Hockey Graduate Student Mackenzie Ellis Graduate student Mackenzie Ellis epitomizes what it means to be a student- athlete at Michigan. She is one of the captains for the field hockey team, starting on their extremely talented defense, and she earned her undergraduate degree last spring and is now in the Ross School of Business for graduate school. Juggling athletics and academics at a high level is all in a day's work for the New Jersey native, who has been doing just that her entire life. "I've played field hockey since I was in fourth grade, and as a kid I was always into school too," Ellis said. "I really liked learning and trying new things. I was always involved in athletics as a three-sport athlete through all of middle school and high school, so it was never really a challenge to balance it all because it was just the norm for me. "My parents always placed a big emphasis on school and athletics. All of my sib- lings were three-sport athletes throughout high school too, so it was always just how things were. That was just life in the Ellis household." Succeeding in the classroom and on the field isn't enough for Ellis either. She spends some of her valuable free time involving herself in community service and trying to launch a program that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Ellis earned her undergraduate degree last spring and was accepted into the Ross School of Business graduate program. PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS
