Thousands of the old red seats — with a hidden coat of their original green paint slightly exposed — were sold by the Wolf- pack Club to fans looking for a final sou- venir from the arena, which opened on NC State's campus in 1949 and was home to Wolfpack men's basketball for 50 years. The process to create a refurbished home for longtime tenants women's basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling con- tinues to take shape. The interior of the building has been stripped, exposing the old Tartan synthetic surface that was installed in the 1970s, and most of the walls in the main lobby and north end of the coliseum have been removed. All the Tennessee red granite has been removed from the interior walls. The steel beams for the second-floor of- fices are now being installed and the upper concourse display cases that will tell the history of all 23 varsity sports are starting to have a framework. Ductwork for the first permanent air- conditioning has been installed, as well as the first sprinkler system in the rafters.
