PAUL COSTA: 1941-2015 Word has been received of the Oct. 12 death of former Notre Dame football player Paul Costa, who played from 1961-64 before going on to an all-star professional football career. He was 73 and died from complications of prostrate cancer. At 6-5 and 250 pounds, he played halfback and defensive end for the Fighting Irish but was mainly in a backup role. Still a fourth-round pick (55th overall) of Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, he ended up playing for the Buffalo Bills, where he earned a Pro Bowl invitation as a tight end his first two seasons. Before moving to offensive tackle in 1969, Costa caught 102 career passes for an impressive 16.7 yards per catch. A mainstay for the Bills through 1972, Costa also played one year for Birmingham in the old World Football League before earning a master's degree and a doctorate from the California Graduate School of Theology. From 1980-97, Costa served as pastor of two non-denominational churches, and wrote on religious and spiritual subjects. He also was an offensive line coach at Evangel College in Springfield, Mo. Costa had been living in North Richland Hills, Texas, upon his death. Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
