Derek Bard ◆ Golf The third-year from New Hartford, N.Y., finished tied for first at the U.S. Collegiate Championship Oct. 18, duplicating last year's medalist finish, although he shared this season's title with three other individuals. No playoff was used to determine an outright winner, but it does not diminish the ac- complishment. Bard carded a 6-under-par 210 in the event, which featured 16 teams ranked among the nation's top 50. He finished under par in all four fall tour- naments, helping to lead the nation's No. 22-ranked squad. Malcolm Brogdon ◆ Basketball At the ACC's annual media day Oct. 26, the redshirt fourth-year guard was named the league's Preseason Co-Player of the Year, along with North Caro- lina fourth-year guard Marcus Paige. It was one of several prestigious honors earned before the season started by the Atlanta native, who led the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game last year en route to first-team all-conference and second-team All-America laurels. He was also named a preseason All-American by several different outlets. Cleo Boyd ◆ Cross Country Virginia won its first ACC women's cross country championship since 1982, with five of its runners finishing among the league's top 22 Oct. 30. Boyd, a third-year, led the way with a fourth-place showing and was named All-ACC. The Kingston, Ontario, native previously placed second in the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. Before this season, she had not placed higher than 14th in a college cross country meet while at UVA, which was ranked a program-best sixth nationally heading into the NCAA Southeast Regional Nov. 13 at Earlysville, Va. Makenzy Doniak ◆ Soccer The fourth-year set a single-game school record with four goals in a 7-1 victory over NC State Oct. 28 — which clinched the ACC regular-season championship for the Cavaliers, who were ranked No. 1 in the country head- ing into the postseason. The ACC Offensive Player of the Year and three-time first-team All-ACC honoree also notched a pair of goals in the league championship game, which UVA lost in a shootout to Florida State, to give her the school records for career goals (60) and points (155).
