Teamwork and the ability to give up con- trol, trusting that a teammate will succeed, is a skill that athletics competition has taught me. It has prepared me to collaborate effectively with my coworkers in my career after UVA. Sadiq explains, "My time as a student-athlete has put in perspective the competitiveness of the world we enter all too soon. Competition has taught me that every team in the country is working hard everyday to be better. I know how hard the competitor has worked to defeat me and I understand I must rise to the occa- sion. The experiences I gain through athletics competition are preparing me to maintain that competitive edge to outperform my peers in the business world." Aimee added a slightly different perspective on how athletics competition has prepared her for her future. She says, "It genuinely makes me happy to see someone who struggles work- ing on something in practice get it right on the field during competition. Seeing my team grow through practice and competition makes me want a career in education…this is what I'm ex- ceptionally passionate about. Through competi- tion, I have realized that education and helping others develop is the field I'd like to work in moving forward." Thanks to her experiences in athletics competition, Aimee found that she has a passion for seeing progress in individuals, and as a result, she discovered that education is her true calling. All three of us have different takes on why athletic competition has prepared us so well for the future. Aimee found her true passion for teaching and education by competing. Sadiq gained valuable insight into the com- petitive edge he needs to be successful. And for me, I gained the invaluable skill of team- work and trust that will surely prepare me for the future.
