UNDER THE DOME A coffin corner punt by Notre Dame's Jim Yoder pins LSU at its 1-yard line, and that sets up the Irish at the Tigers' 36 on the ensu- ing possession that sees Scott Hempel kick the game-winning field goal from 24 yards out with 2:54 remaining. 35 Years Ago: Nov. 22, 1980 In his final home game, head coach Dan Devine's Notre Dame defense sets a school record by not allowing a touchdown through 23 straight quarters — a standard that still remains — while defeat- ing Air Force 24-10. After the victory, the 9-0-1 and No. 2-ranked Irish officially accept a bid to play No. 1 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Phil Carter rushes for 181 yards on 29 carries for Notre Dame. On defense, All-Americans Scott Zettek at end and Bob Crable at linebacker lead a unit that finally in the fourth quarter yields its first TD in six games. 20 Years Ago: Nov. 18, 1995 With an $8 million Bowl Alliance bid on the line, Notre Dame rolls to a 44-14 victory at Air Force to finish the regular season 9-2 and earn an invitation to play Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Junior quarterback Tom Krug starts in place of the injured Ron Powlus, but he attempts only 13 passes while the Irish romp for 410 rushing yards. Tailbacks Randy Kinder and Autry Denson amass 121 and 109 yards on the ground, respectively, while fullback Marc Edwards adds 84. — Lou Somogyi Notre Dame SCraPer mat *Please add sales tax in in, Mi, and nC Mat is dropshipped direct from manufac- turer.
