WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BY LOU SOMOGYI R eplacing All-American guard Jewell Loyd's 19.8 points per game from last year — the highest scoring average by a Notre Dame player since Katryna Gaither set the school record of 20.4 during the 1996-97 Final Four cam- paign — will be done by committee. A decent portion of it might be from the two newest members added to the committee: freshman reserve guards Marina Mabrey and Arike Ogun- bowale. In the lone exhibition contest prior to the Nov. 15 season opener against Bucknell, the rookie tandem displayed a versatile skill set on offense during a 101-52 victory versus Wayne State Nov. 7. Mabrey paced the team in scor- ing with 22 points, 20 of which came in the second half, while converting 7 of 9 shots from the field, 1 of 2 three- pointers and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Older sister and captain Michaela Mabrey is primarily a three-point spe- cialist, whereas the younger sibling is more apt to drive to the bucket, with either hand, or pull up for the mid- range jumper. "When the ball is on the other side of the court I like to move around a lot," the younger Mabrey said. "It leads to openings for me … I think I need to work on being the point and know- ing where everyone else needs to be. I know where I am supposed to be, but I need to work on knowing where every- one else needs to be."
