FAN FORUM HEAT OF THE MOMENT I am a bit torn when I think about how I should react to Coach Kelly's reaction to David Grimes. No, it did not look good, but in a close game what Kelly saw was probably what everyone else saw. To my scant recollection, when a referee points directly at someone there seems to be an almost reflexive response for them to simultaneously reach into their pocket to pull out that yellow flag. That referee pointed di- rectly at David Grimes. In my mind, Kelly may have responded only partly because he was trying to prevent a penalty. A small portion of him may have just been upset because he may have already conceded that that pen- alty was already being assessed. Because of the game situation, I am glad that the referee showed some re- straint, but the fact that the penalty was not assessed is still a surprise after the referee points. I honestly would not be surprised if Kelly's overreaction may not have influenced the referee into realizing that the assistant coach had been punished enough and that Notre Dame would indeed not tolerate lack of control of their sideline. It's not like to old days when coaches were allowed to be fierier. Ironically, Kelly's reaction may have actually turned out to be more ser- endipitous for Grimes than lamen- table. If things turned out differently and Grimes would have been fired or resigned after costing the team, his coaching career may have indeed been over. Would that be a preferred op- tion? I think not. One thing for sure — there can be no doubting Kelly's fight and commit- ment to that team. Robert Kalc South Bend, Ind. ANGER MANAGEMENT As a 65-plus year fan of Notre Dame, it was appalling to see the display of anger by Coach Kelly during the Temple game. Regardless of the rea- son, there is absolutely no excuse for his behavior. He is the head football coach at one of the most prestigious universities in the country and did nothing but embarrass the university, BE HEARD!
