GAME PREVIEW: BOSTON COLLEGE nearly sacked Golson for a safety. On Oct. 3, Duke won a game with- out scoring a touchdown for the first time since 1978 with a 9-7 victory ver- sus Boston College, which missed on its first nine passing attempts. Against Wake Forest Oct. 10, the Eagles held the Demon Deacons to 142 yards of total offense, but still lost 3-0. Not only did BC miss on 26- and 31-yard field goals, but quarterback Troy Flutie lost a fumble at the Wake Forest 8-yard line with less than two minutes left. After a Wake Forest turn- over, the Eagles had a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line with 29 seconds left but couldn't push the ball into the end zone before time elapsed. Ironically, the most points scored by Boston College in an ACC game this year was a 34-17 loss to current No. 1 Clemson, but the first TD drive cov- ered only 20 yards and the last came in the closing minute. A week later at Louisville, Boston College's lone touchdowns in the 17-13 loss came off a blocked punt and on a six-yard drive. The Eagles totaled a paltry 79 yards of total offense while getting sacked eight times. Versus Virginia Tech, Boston College head coach Steve Addazio used his fourth different quarterback this sea- son, freshman walk-on John Fadule, but the Eagles managed only 80 yards of total offense in the first half while falling behind 20-0 in the 26-10 defeat. Finally Nov. 7, with Fadule the starter, the Eagles lost at home to North Carolina State, 24-8, to drop to 0-7 in the league. A third shutout was averted with a touchdown in the final 90 seconds. Addazio, an offensive line coach at Predictions Bryan Driskell: Notre Dame 30, Boston College 6 Boston College's outstanding defense will make it hard for the Irish to move the ball early, but Notre Dame will eventually figure out ways to get the ball down the field and will roll in the second half. Andrew Ivins: Notre Dame 49, Boston College 9 This has trap game written all over it, but the leaders in Notre Dame's locker room have their eyes on the prize, and the defense could even pitch a shutout in Fenway Park. Andrew Owens: Notre Dame 34, Boston College 14 The Eagles' putrid offense is averaging 8.0 points per game in ACC contests this season. They might hang around, but they can't outscore the Irish in 60 minutes. Lou Somogyi: Notre Dame 28, Boston College 7 As long as the Irish don't give up a couple of defensive and special teams scores while turning the ball over four or more times (like at Clemson), it should have the horsepower to win fairly handily. Jordan Wells: Notre Dame 31, Boston College 10 The Eagles defense might be able to keep it close for a while, but the Irish offense will eventually break through sooner or later, and Boston College doesn't have the firepower to answer.
