76 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ BASKETBALL RECRUITING defending North Carolina 4-A state champs Garner High. The 6-1, 165-pound Allen pointed to his 40-point effort against Durham (N.C.) Voy- ager Academy in the third-place game of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational Dec. 29 as a turning point. "My stock has gone up after the Holiday Invitational," Allen said. "Everything has been going up for me." Gottfried attended the East Wake High at Garner game shortly after the Holiday Invitational, a gesture that impressed Allen. "It was really a surprise seeing Coach Gottfried at the game," he explained. "I didn't know he was going to show up. That was a good surprise. That was the start of them recruiting me." Allen, in turn, came to watch the Wolf- pack upset Miami 85-69 Jan. 30. "I sat right behind the bench, and they had a really good game," said Allen, 17. "Cat Barber had a good game, and one of the twins shot well from the field and on three-pointers." Allen is a score-first point guard with more than 1,000 career points at Garner. He entered the playoffs in late February averag- ing around 25 points, five assists and three steals per game. Allen likes how NC State gives its point guards offensive freedom. "They come off a lot of screen and roll, and that is my type of game," he said. Allen is part of the Garner Road travel- ing team, which has recently produced the Pack's Warren and redshirt junior shooting guard Terry Henderson. Allen has known those two since he was around 9 years old. "Terry tells me a lot about NC State," Allen said. "T.J. has always been a scorer, even when he was a young guy. He is a quiet guy."
