80 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ PACK PAST worked with all kinds of great people. "It was a very satisfying career." That's the reason the Hippses wanted to establish an estate endowment to his alma mater: to create similar opportunities for generations of future engineers and student-athletes to come. Of particular importance to the Hipps were the football scholarships because Brewbaker and Grant were such inspira- tional figures to him. Brewbaker was a veteran North Caro- lina high school coach that Edwards made his first hire in 1954 to help recruit talent from the state. In his 17-year career at Dur- ham High, Brewbaker' directed teams that played in six state title games, winning three and tying in another. He spent another 17 years working for Edwards at NC State, where he recruited All-Americans like Ro- man Gabriel, Dennis Byrd, Freddie Combs and Gerald Warren. As the defensive line coach, Brewbaker not only coached Hipps, but also highly decorated defensive stars like Byrd, Darrell Dess, Bert Wilder, Mark Capuano and Ron Carpenter. Brewbaker coached his entire NC State career following surgery to remove a brain tumor that left him partially incapacitated with physical and medical issues that af- fected him until his death in November 1982. Edwards once said of his longtime friend, "His troubles would have made in- valids of most men, but not him. He had more courage, I believe, than any man I've ever known." Brewbaker was a transforming figure for Hipps as well. W.B. Thompson Inc. Farm, Lawn & Garden Supplies Proudly Suppor ting NC Sta te Athletics for More Than 40 Years 916 NC Highway 33 East P.O.
