First, freshman fullback Jim Browner — who was third in rushing in 1975 — is moved to strong safety because classmate Jerome Heavens totaled a freshman-record 756 yards while pacing the team in rushing. Next, starting sophomore split end Ted Burgmeier — who caught the game-winning 80-yard touchdown pass from Joe Montana with 1:03 remaining in the previous fall's 21-14 win at North Carolina — is shifted to cornerback to replace graduated starter Tom Lopienski. Finally, freshman quarterback and starting punter Joe Restic — who threw a 10-yard touchdown pass in the finale, a 32-9 win at Miami — is shifted to free safety, where he would start the final 10 games in 1976. 30 Years Ago: April 26, 1986 New head coach Lou Holtz's first scrimmage ends with the Gold defeating the Blue, 24-17, in front of the second-largest spring game audience ever at Notre Dame: 32,071. Five of the 11 fumbles in the scrimmage are lost, and starting quarterback Steve Beuerlein of the losing Blue team tosses two interceptions. The Gold is led by junior wideout Tim Brown, who returns a punt 52 yards for one score and also nabs a 64-yard touch- down off a hook-and-ladder from quarterback Terry Andrysiak to wide receiver Alvin Miller to Brown. 15 Years Ago: April 1, 2001 Senior National Player of the Year Ruth Riley has her "Moment of Ruth" when she connects on two free throws with 5.8 seconds left to provide the winning points to defeat Purdue, 68-66, and win the first national title for Notre Dame women's basketball. The 6-5 Macy, Ind., native finishes with 28 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots in the triumph. Two days earlier, Notre Dame vanquished powerful UConn — led by Diana Taurasi — with all five Irish starters scoring in double fig- ures, led by point guard and current assistant Niele Ivey's 21.
