that put the starter in a "looking over
the shoulder" mindset?
The dilemmas are more of a positive
nature because of the confidence from the
staff with either one at the throttle to be
a Big Six bowl, or maybe even a College
Football Playoff, contender.
While Kizer made his bones in 2015
with a Cinderella‑like appearance, Zaire
in his two full games as the starter for
Notre Dame, versus LSU and Texas, was
31‑of‑37 (83.8 percent) for 409 yards with
four touchdowns and no interceptions,
while adding 112 rushing yards. At Vir‑
ginia, Zaire struggled on the road with
his passing (7 of 18), but he did rush for
87 yards on only 10 carries prior to his
injury.
The strong RB tandem of senior Tarean
Folston and sophomore Josh Adams will
complement whoever is at quarterback
in 2016. However, a greater onus will be
placed on the QBs because:
• There is no receiver for now to
stretch the field vertically and open up
so many other avenues of the offense.
It was a role filled by NFL‑bound Will
Fuller the past two years.
• Tight end might need to play a
much more prominent role in an offense
that lost four of its top five pass catchers
from 2015.
• Three new line starters must be
found, so some shifting around also
might be required in order to find the
best five‑man combination, meaning
there might be some growing pains dur‑
ing the experimentations.
In the never‑ending quarterback
drama that has been part of Kelly's ten‑
ure in South Bend, the good news is
regardless of the starter, Kizer and Zaire
will be looked upon as leading men in
Notre Dame's 2016 offense. ✦
