freestyle. Third-year Kaitlyn Jones touched first in the 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly, while classmate Laura Simon was victorious in the 200 breaststroke. Busch was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. Although Bartholomew said the NCAA Tournament performance fell below the team's goal, the Cavaliers did score a sec- ond top-five finish. "We didn't go out to the NCAAs and achieve our goal of top four, but still top five is huge," she said. Smith points out that she sees great po- tential with this young squad after another strong national showing. "I think this year we have many girls that it was their first time making the meet, or it would be their first time scoring," Smith noted. "Next year, there will be many girls making the meet for their second time and they can focus on scoring. And the girls that scored can focus on getting top eight and All-American, and getting more points for the team." At the NCAA meet, Smith successfully defended her 500 and 1,650 freestyle ti- tles, while Bartholomew was the NCAA runner-up in the 100 and 200 backstroke. The Cavaliers also finished in the top eight of four separate relays for the first time in school history. The huge improvement in relays is a di- rect result of the change in approach that Busch brought with him to Virginia. When Mark Bernardino retired in 2013 after 28 ACC team titles during his 35 sea- sons at Virginia, director of athletics Craig Littlepage brought in Busch, who was a rising star in the college ranks.
