Through Virginia's first 29 games, Smith
was hitting a robust .324 replete with three
home runs, a team-best 30 RBI and an im-
pressive .989 OPS (on-base percentage plus
slugging percentage).
"I've always been a guy that likes to go the
other way," Smith said while explaining his
theory about hitting. "The approach here is to
perfect hitting to all fields."
Smith, who bats and throws left-handed,
has been a model of consistency.
"He uses the whole field," O'Connor said.
"He pulls home runs. He'll take what he's
given. He'll hit balls the other way, especially
