and swam. What prompted you to become inter-
ested in rowing?
Casto: "When I got to college [Georgia Tech; Casto
transferred to Virginia in the spring of 2014] I was
bored. I wasn't doing a sport.
"I got a message from the novice club coach at
Georgia Tech asking me to try out. I went to practice
one day and I really liked it."
Cavalier Corner: What do you like the most about
crew?
Casto: "No matter what your goal is you can set
them as high as you want. It will require you to
work hard, but no matter when you start this sport
if you're willing to put in the time and effort you can
do whatever you want.
"The one thing I really love about it is our team is
really special. My teammates inspire me every day
to be a better rower and a better person. People in
the rowing world are really welcoming and have
inspired me."
Cavalier Corner: What are the factors that have
enabled you to attain such a high level of success
at Virginia?
Casto: "Just buying into the training program and
trying to do the best I can every day. If you let them,
our coaches will make you into amazing rowers.
"It took me from being a poor rower to someone
who can hold her own. Between amazing coaches
and really trying to put in as much work as you can
with this sport, that's helped me a lot."
Cavalier Corner: You're going to graduate with a
bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. What
are you plans after you graduate?
Casto: "I'm going to enroll in a program in Boston
called the Institute for Rowing Leadership. It's al-
most like a graduate school for coaching.
"What I want to do one day is to coach collegiate
women. Probably for the next few years, I'll keep
training and see where that takes me with rowing."
