Mendenhall expects a number of in- coming first-years to add depth on that side of the ball. He also expects several of UVA's 2016 signees to help out on of- fense, where the discussion always has to begin at quarterback. Redshirt fourth-year Matt Johns, Virgin- ia's starter for the past two seasons, and fourth-year backup Conner Brewer didn't come into the spring competing for the job, but that race eventually opened up largely due to the way Brewer performed. "Consistency," Mendenhall said of how Brewer was able to make it a competition. "Throwing the ball on time to the right per- son and moving the chains. We have com- petition at every spot on our team, including quarterback. I like it that way. I think it actu- ally promotes the entire team competing at a higher level. "Everything is earned and not given, and it's the same at that position. Conner has made the most of his opportunity having competition for the spring." Consistency might be the theme of UVA's offseason and fall camp given what Menden- hall saw, particularly from an offense that will go from being a balanced pro-style at- tack to one that will try to run as many plays as possible and get the ball out to various playmakers in the process. "Throwing and catching more consis- tently," Mendenhall said when asked about his objective for that group. "We've es- tablished a few players that are dynamic. [Third-year] Doni Dowling had not just a strong spring, but he had an exceptional spring and is very, very good. I liked him a lot, not only as a person but as a player. And then in addition to that, we established others that we know can play, [redshirt third- year] Andre Levrone, [redshirt first-year]
