"I think it's an incredible feat," she said. "The team is thrilled to bring it back to UVA. We've done really well in NCAA play — mak- ing it eight times to the final. "What we were missing was the ACC cham- pionship. It's allowed our program to continue to build on its tradition." If you buy into the cliché that success breeds success, then the Cavaliers did more than can be imagined to ensure that tradition continues — one reason being their back-to-back ACC Tournament championships have given recruit- ing a major boost. "I definitely agree that what we've accom- plished will help in recruiting," Lewellen said. "We've already had two big commitments for 2017. Winning the ACCs last year helped those young ladies realize the program is good. "Winning it again just shows this is a tradi- tion and that this is a place where golf is im- portant to the university. It's very much helped in recruiting." ◆ LAUREN COUGHLIN HAS A DAY TO REMEMBER Virginia redshirt fourth-year Lauren Cough- lin may have more memorable days in her life, but it may be impossible for her to have a more memorable one than June 17. Not only did Coughlin capture the ACC individual golf championship, but shortly thereafter she accepted a marriage proposal from former Cavalier football player John Pond. "I knew he wanted to do something flashy and memorable," Coughlin said. "I thought it would be a situation he was looking for to do it." There was, however, one caveat after Coughlin accepted. "I was like: 'You're never going to beat me in golf. It's never going to happen,'" she said. Coughlin wasn't going to let Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho beat her for the champion- ship. The two were tied as they approached the 54th and final hole. "She's a very long hitter, so I thought she would make birdie," Coughlin said. "So I thought I would have to make birdie to tie." Coughlin birdied the last hole, but Kupcho bogeyed it to enable Coughlin to become only the second UVA female to win the ACC individual championship. Right after earning medalist honors at the ACC Championships, redshirt fourth-year Lau- ren Coughlin accepted a marriage proposal from former UVA football player John Pond.
