WOLFPACK FOOTBALL Taylor, who was a three-sport star at nearby Lillington (N.C.) Harnett Central High, redshirted last year. Rivals.com ranked Taylor a three-star prospect in the class of 2011, and he picked NC State over an offer from East Carolina. He also earned offers from Clemson and North Carolina earlier in his recruiting process. The 6-2, 190-pound Taylor completed 2 of 6 passes for 17 yards with two interceptions and was sacked twice for minus-16 yards for the White team during the Kay Yow Spring Game April 21. Zach Gentry And Tyler Purvis Dean Haynes, who has left the program, ran for 320 yards in 2010 and then moved to quarterback Brian Taylor will no longer play football but remain at NCSU. Haynes transferred to Tennessee-Chatta- nooga, where he'll have two years of eligi- bility remaining to play safety for the Mocs. The 5-11, 199-pound Haynes switched from safety to running back just two weeks prior to NC State's 2010 season opener and ended up starting in the first game against Western Carolina, gaining 69 yards and scor- ing a touchdown. During the 2010 campaign, Haynes had 83 carries for 320 yards and three touchdowns while catching 13 passes for 118 yards and a score in 10 games. He tallied a career-high 75 yards on 18 carries at Georgia Tech, plus caught a pass for 34 yards. The physical runner suffered a head injury against Florida State and played sparingly over the last five games of the season, missing three contests. The Tunnel Hill, Ga., native switched back to safety for the 2011 season and had eight tackles in 12 games, mainly playing on special teams. He played safety against Liberty and Clemson, recording three tackles in seven plays during the latter game. The Rivals.com class of 2009 two-star prospect picked NC State over offers from East Carolina, UAB, Middle Tennessee State and Appalachian State. Coleman graduated from NC State and will be able to play immediately and have two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-0, 202-pounder from Detroit, played in every game last year on special teams, finishing with five tackles. Coleman totaled 13 tack- les in 21 games during his two-year career at NC State. Rivals.com rated Coleman as a two-star prospect coming out of the Hun School in Princeton, N.J., in 2009. He picked the Wolfpack over offers from Iowa and Minnesota. safety in 2011, where he posted eight tackles. Scholarships are renewed after each year. "These two young men have worked hard on and off the field," O'Brien said. "We look forward to their continued contributions to our team in 2012." Gentry, a senior outside linebacker, was the Pack's leader in special teams tackles in 2011. He had 15 tackles apiece the last two years in 26 games played. The 6-0, 204-pound younger brother of former NC State fullback Taylor Gentry ranked second on the squad with 188 special teams snaps last fall. He also was the Defen- sive Scout Team Player of the Week leading up to the win over North Carolina. The 6-3, 220-pound Purvis saw action in 11 games last season at fullback and on special teams, hauling in two touchdown receptions in just 11 plays versus Georgia Tech. Purvis and redshirt sophomore Lo- gan Winkles filled in at fullback after Taylor Gentry suffered a season-ending injury dur- ing the fifth game against Georgia Tech. Purvis finished with five receptions for 36 yards and two touchdowns, while playing 51 snaps in 11 games. ACC Football Kickoff Set For July 22-23 The 41st annual ACC Football Kickoff will be held at the Grandover Resort July 22-23 in Greensboro, N.C. The event serves as the official start of the 2012 football cam- paign and features the head coach and two players from all 12 conference squads, as well as ACC commissioner John Swofford. NC State head coach Tom O'Brien typi- cally reveals any roster changes or injuries that have occurred since the spring game.
