38 OCT. 17, 2016 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED against Syracuse, with the Notre Dame defense showing a more aggressive philosophy under new defensive coordinator Greg Hudson. Advantage: Notre Dame NOTRE DAME RUNNING GAME VS. STANFORD RUN DEFENSE Stanford's rushing defense has been about as erratic as its rushing offense. Its performance the first three games was very good, with Stanford giving up just 95.3 yards per outing as it jumped out to a 3-0 start. Washington exposed Stanford's lack of size and depth along the line, gashing the Cardinal to the tune of 214 yards (5.2 per rush) and three touch- downs. Stanford's three-man line averages just 273 pounds, and its biggest starter, junior nose guard Harrison Phillips, weighs just 285 pounds. Stanford does have a major weapon up front in junior end Solomon Thomas. The 6-3, 273-pound native of Coppell, Texas, is one of the most tal- ented linemen Notre Dame will face all season. Thomas is second on the team with 3.5 tackles for loss during the first four games. A troubling statistic for Stanford is the fact that fifth-year senior safeties Zach Hoffpauir (21 tack- les) and Dallas Lloyd (17 tackles) are the team's top two tacklers through the first four contests. Having to get its safeties so involved against the run has left Stanford vulnerable in the pass game. The Irish ranked 74th in the country with an aver- age of 167.6 rushing yards per game. Notre Dame's ground attack has been good this season outside of a 57-yard performance against Michigan State. In its four other contests, the Irish ground game churned out 195.3 yards a game. Sophomore running back Josh Adams paced the team with 340 yards through five games, while GAME PREVIEW: STANFORD Offense Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Cl. WR 6 E.
