In the Braves' first year in Milwaukee (1953) they set a National League record for attendance in a season with 1.8 million. It also helped inspire the westward expansion of baseball. The year after Milwaukee won the World Series, in 1958 the Brooklyn Dodgers and San Francisco Giants moved to Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively. Earlier in his career, Miller helped rescue the Green Bay Packers from a financial crisis in 1950, resulting in him becoming an "honorary coach" for the Packers, who built a dynasty a decade later. Miller also created a sports marketing division at the brewery that was the first of its kind. Eck recounted a story of how Notre Dame and football were a constant in his life. "The year Rockne died [1931], Fred was getting married but he post- poned the wedding date because he wanted to finish the filming of 'The Spirit of Notre Dame' and flew out to California to make sure it was finished," Eck said. "Then on his honeymoon to Hawaii, he and my grandmother are riding around in a carriage, and come across a Univer- sity of Hawaii football practice. "Fred Miller jumps out of the car- riage and he starts instructing the players, because anybody who played for Knute Rockne had instant credibility. Grandma sat in the car- riage for about an hour … she wasn't very happy about it." When Miller flew in for a practice before the start of the 1946 season and an Irish dynasty, Eck wrote how Leahy implored him to stay with the team. "Freddie you're in such wonderful shape, you should be out here help- ing us," Leahy said. Within a few minutes, Miller donned a uniform and was working out with the tackles with assistant Moose Krause. He remained in that "volunteer" capac- ity through 1953, or Leahy's retirement. The trio of Leahy, Krause and Miller, a devout Catholic and daily communi- cant, often vacationed together, with Miller usually attempting to get the per- fectionist Leahy to relax, and even calm him down during road trips. Like his mentor, Rockne, Miller 's life ended far too soon in a plane crash, which was a "JFK moment" to Notre Dame and Milwaukee people, among many others. "When I talked to the athletes, the people in Fred Jr.'s class, the peo- ple in Milwaukee, everybody knew where they were when they heard about the crash," Eck said. "There were people from Fred Jr.'s class who say, 'Freddie's still in our prayers to this day. We pray for him every night.'" One month after Miller 's death, Notre Dame president Rev. Theodore Hesburgh delivered a sermon "Notre Dame Men: Father & Son" on the CBS Radio Program that has been transcribed in Eck's book. "It was about how to live your life every day so you're ready to meet God, because you don't know which day will be your last day," Eck said of Hesburgh's sermon. During his time on Earth, Miller embodied the High Life through ser- vice, support and giving. ✦ MEMORABILIA REAL ESTATE Vintage Notre Dame Memorabilia Augie's Locker Room ND Stadium Items, Jerseys, Helmets, Autographs and One of a Kind Rockne Items.
