INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS new women's basketball coach at the end of April, she lauded the Wolverines' facilities, academic standing and campus, saying they would all be important tools on the recruiting trail. And she's already putting them to good use. The first came from point guard Shannon Smith, who will be transferring to Ann Arbor from North Carolina, where she averaged 3.0 points and 1.7 rebounds a game last season as a redshirt freshman. At Gaston (N.C.) Forestview, Smith led the team to a guard nationally and the No. 53 overall player in the 2013 class by HoopGurlz. "She is a strongly built 5-7, who uses short and quick dribble moves to penetrate the lane, can take a hit and has the powers of concentration to still finish shots," HoopGurlz noted of Thompson. She averaged 11.0 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game last season. Phoenix St. Mary's guard 2010 state championship and won the North Carolina Miss Basketball Award. Due to NCAA transfer rules, the 5-7 Smith will be able to play in 2013-14 as a redshirt junior. In June, the Wolverines picked up a commitment from Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra standout Siera Thomp- son, who is rated a four-star prospect, the No. 13 point for all but the pommel horse on the second day of action, putting his roster spot in jeopardy. However, Team USA named Mikulak to its five-man squad, believing he had shown enough potential to be a high scorer when healthy. He becomes the first U-M gymnast in program history to compete for the Americans (and the ninth gymnast overall to go to the Olympics).
