UNDER THE DOME After playing the first night game in Michigan history last season, the Fighting Irish will host the Wolverines in a sunset kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 22. NOCTURNAL IRISH Notre Dame will go four straight Saturdays next season without playing a football game while the sun is shining. The Irish announced an 8 p.m. EST kickoff with Michigan State on Sept. 15 this season, which will start a string of three straight games un- der the lights for the Irish. In the weeks that follow Notre Dame's game with the Spartans, the Irish play Michigan at night in Notre Dame Stadium, have an open week and then face Miami at Soldier Field. Both contests are home games for the Irish and are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. The Notre Dame-Michigan State game will be aired on ABC. It is the fourth time in Notre Dame's last five trips to East Lansing that the teams have played in prime time. Times have not been set for games against Okla- homa, Boston College and the season finale at USC. All three could be potential night starts as well, which would give the Irish six for the season. Six late starts would tie the program record set last sea- son when Notre Dame played Michigan, Purdue, USC, Wake Forest, Maryland and Stanford after dark. JUNE/JULY 2012 32 Former Notre Dame women's basket- ball center Ruth Riley (1997-2001) will be inducted into the Capital One Academic All-America Hall of Fame, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on June 25, 2012, in St. Louis. Since the Hall of Fame's inception in IT'S ALL ACADEMIC FOR RUTH RILEY PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL 1988, 117 individuals have been selected for the honor, and Notre Dame and UCLA lead the way with seven apiece. The other Notre Dame inductees include former football players Bob Burger (2006), Robert Thomas (1996), Dave Casper (1993) and Joe Theismann (1990), plus basketball play- ers John Paxson (2005) and Dr. Carol Lally Shields (honorary member in 2011). The Associated Press and Naismith Wom- en's College Player of the Year after leading the Irish to a 34-2 record and 2001 national title, Riley also was an eight-time Dean's List selection at Notre Dame and graduated with a 3.64 grade-point average in psychol- ogy and sociology from the College of Arts and Letters. An 11-year WNBA veteran, Riley is one of seven players who have earned an NCAA title, WNBA crown and Olympic gold medal (2004 in Athens Greece) in their careers. Appointed to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Riley received the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award in 2010, presented annually to one male and one female athlete who exemplify a high degree of citizenship. She also is the author of a children's book, The Spirit of Basket- ball, which was published in 2005.
