www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 28, 2016 5 FAN FORUM WINNING BEYOND THE FIELD This year has brought back un- pleasant memories of past losing seasons. The one that stands out for me is 1956 when ND went 2-8 — yet at the same time Paul Hornung won the Heisman Trophy. To make up for this season I have followed a few alumni who are play- ing pro ball. Recently, I was thrilled to see former Notre Dame player, Golden Tate, catch the winning touchdown pass for the Detroit Lions. Equally satisfying was his quick in- terview after the game. He was artic- ulate, modest, courteous and ended with a sincere "thank you" and a win- ning smile! He made me proud. And then I read about Corey Rob- inson in Todd Burlage's Nov. 14 edi- tion of Blue & Gold Illustrated. Wow! Pat Rogers '58 Via the Internet TIME FOR CHANGE … ON NBC Being at Notre Dame on a home football game is truly an experience that words cannot describe. The beautiful campus, the cheerleaders, the band, the Irish Guard, the lepre- chaun, and the team walking to the stadium are just a few of the many highlights that make it a very memo- rable experience. My wife and son attended the Oct. 29 Miami game and took in as much as possible. However, the big- gest highlight was the game. Not just the win, which was awesome, but the fact that we did not have to endure another anti-Notre Dame broadcast from Doug Flutie and Dan Hicks. It is time to make a change. Flutie & Hicks must go! I know there are numerous Notre Dame graduates who are sports broadcasters. Brady Quinn (FOX Sports) and Aaron Tay- lor (CBS Sports) would make a great team to call the NBC broadcasts. Unfortunately, I now am forced to turn my TV on mute and watch the game in silence. Notre Dame has some of the smart- est students in the country. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could come up with a way that Notre Dame fans can watch the game on TV, bypass Flutie and Hicks — and hear the an- nouncer from the stadium instead! Go Irish! Gary Ross, CSP Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. WE CAN DO BETTER Brian Kelly must go! For over two years Kelly lost when Brian Van Gorder's defenses gave up 40-plus points a game. He's lost when a once powerful of- fense went dormant. He's lost when special teams gave up TDs on blocked punts and kick returns. This team is undisciplined and le- thargic. He's lousy on player reten- tion and must take some responsibil- ity for academic scandals. He can't or won't recruit on defense. Take away the miracle 2012 sea- son and he's an 8-5 coach. Not good enough. We can and must do better. Hugh O'Brien '66 Dallas Some fans would like to see former Irish players join the NBC Sports broadcast team to counteract what they perceive to be an anti-Notre Dame sentiment from the current crew. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA The Shamrock Series uniforms Notre Dame wears once a year always elicit a wide range of emotions. Here is a small sample from Blueand‑ Gold.com following Notre Dame's 44‑6 victory over Army West Point in San Antonio: Bubbacarlos: Looks really bad. Mgormal1: Whatever takes the focus off our first 9 games. SDS123: Love them. Perfect theme for this game. Hollandj3626: With the exception of the all‑ white uniforms in Dallas against Arizona State (2013) these are my favorite. I think they look incredibly rad. Salty57: Probably my favorite Shamrock Series ones to date. Stover1: The uniforms were perfect for this weekend, in honor of our Veterans. The theme was both Irish history and respect towards the service academies. In my opinion, if Notre Dame ever changed the plain gold helmets, these hel‑ mets would be my choice — minus the green stripe down the middle. ND Football: Speaking of uniforms did any‑ one notice Navy and Army's uniform pants? Navy's was Under Armor and Army's was Nike. Both were closer to the color of gold than Notre Dame's mustard color. Septon34: It boggles my mind that Notre Dame's school colors are blue and gold but they wear mustard pants. Yes, they wore them in the old days, but back then gold was not available. Why can't they wear the same pants they wore during the Holtz era? Domer7: Speaking as a Vet, I fail to connect them to anything military related. They are flat out ugly and looked even worse against the field turf. This is nothing more than a Nike/Oregon copycat gimmick that enables Under Armour to peddle move overpriced gear. Wearing them to entice some 17‑18 year old high school athlete to come to Notre Dame, let alone thinking they somehow assist current player performance, is ludicrous. Twalsh: As long as the 90 to 100 kids wearing them like them and feel good about them, they are OK by me. FROM THE WEBSITE BE HEARD! Send your letters to: Letters Blue & Gold Illustrated P. O.
