The record in the shot clock era of men's basketball (since 1986) is 26 in a 2014 win over Rutgers. ◆ Dec. 22, 1979 — Program legend Ralph Sampson posts the first triple-double of his career (and the second in school history) with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 12 blocks in an 84-60 win over Army. Exactly a week later, he posts UVA's most recent triple-double with 15 points, 22 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 79-58 win over Old Dominion. ◆ Dec. 31, 1984 — Virginia appears in its first bowl game and records a 27-24 win over Purdue in the Peach Bowl. The Cavs trailed by 10 at halftime but did not allow a point in the second half, while the ground game got go- ing on the other side of the ball, — UVA ran for nearly 200 yards after the break. Offensive MVP Howard Perry finished with 114 rushing yards and a touchdown, while defensive MVP Ray Daly picked off Purdue quarterback Jim Everett twice, including on a critical fourth-quarter drive when Purdue was marching for a possible go-ahead score. UVA finished 8-2-2 and ranked 17th by the Associated Press. UVA HISTORY PHOTO COURTESY UVA "To say that I'm proud of our team is an understatement. We have something special happening in C'ville. In due time." — Tweet from redshirt third-year quarterback KURT BENKERT after UVA's last- second 32-25 loss to then-No. 5 Louisville Oct. 29; his post was retweeted 115 times and received 518 favorites "Expect [London] Perrantes to increase his scor- ing this year, as well, in an effort to make up for what the team lost in [Malcolm] Brogdon and [Anthony] Gill. He's been working on being a more aggressive shooter all over the floor after relying on his perimeter shot last season, when he led the ACC by making 48.8 percent of his three-pointers. Perrantes has also been working in practice to get his younger teammates to adopt a more aggressive shooting mentality." — The Washington Post's Ava Wallace on London Perrantes "I think we have a very strong class. I think the coaches did a good job recruiting and getting more length and size, and hopefully they can continue to get more talent. But I think we can have a huge impact on the season. I have high expectations for myself and our class and the team overall." — First-year guard Jocelyn Wil- loughby on the rookie class for women's basketball that also fea- tures guard Dominique Toussaint, 6-9 center Felicia Aiyeotan and 6-3 forward Lisa Jablonowski; Willoughby and Tossaint were both named Gatorade Player of the Year in their home states as seniors HOO'S TALKING PHOTO BY MATT RILEY /COURTESY UVA
