GETTING A LEG UP
Virginia fourth-year punter Nicholas Conte was honored for his accom-
plishments both on the field and in the classroom in early November. The
Roanoke, Va., native was one of 10 student-athletes named a semifinalist
for the Ray Guy Award, which is given annually to the National Punter of
the Year. He was also tabbed as a 2016 CoSIDA District Academic All-Amer-
ican and a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Campbell
Trophy, which is known as the Academic Heisman.
Through games of Nov. 12, Conte led the ACC and ranked 11th nationally
in punting average (44.8 yards per attempt), while his 29 punts inside the
20 led the country. Of those 29, 13 were downed inside the 10-yard line,
six inside the 5-yard line and five at the 1-yard line. His career 44.7 punting
average is a program best.
In the classroom, Conte graduated with a degree in human biology last
May. He currently is pursuing a master's in sports administration.
