IRISH LOSE THREE PLAYERS UNDER THE DOME three players on the 2012 spring roster appear to have ended before they ever truly began. Junior running back Cam Roberson The Notre Dame football careers of and sophomore offensive guard Brad Carrico applied for and received medi- cal hardship status from the Univer- sity of Notre Dame when it was deter- mined that physical problems would no longer allow them to play football. Sophomore offensive tackle Jordan Prestwood also has departed the pro- gram, but his case is murkier. "Jordan is no longer with us and I'm not able to get into the specifics about that because of privacy laws," head coach Brian Kelly said on Aug. 8. The third departure, Prestwood, has already had a nomadic trail, originally committing to Notre Dame in April 2010 before flipping to Florida State later that fall and becoming an early enrollee for the Seminoles during the 2011 spring semester. At the conclusion of that spring, 6-1, 215-pound Roberson gave a verbal commitment to former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis at the start of the 2009 season, and remained with the Irish during the transition from Weis to Kelly after a 6-6 campaign. Unfortunately, his career trajectory changed a couple of months later dur- ing a spring practice on March 26, 2011, when he incurred a shattered knee that tore multiple ligaments during a tack- ling drill inside the Loftus Center and shelved him for all of 2011. "He's working as hard as he can," This spring the 6-5, 290-pounder had surgery on his foot, which had been bothering him since his high school days. We feel so bad for the young man because he loves Notre Dame, he loves football, it's just been a hard road for him." Roberson did suit up in shorts for the first several practices this August, but by the first day of pads on Aug. 8 he was not available.
