The Americans beat Japan 2-1 to win gold after holding off a gritty Ca- nadian effort in the semifinals. Canada, which featured former Notre Dame players Candace Chapman and Melissa Tancredi, controlled most of the match before a controversial call gave the U.S. team a chance to tie the game on a free kick in the final 10 minutes. The U.S. team went on to win 4-3 in the closing minutes of overtime. Tancredi started all six games for the Canadians and led the team with four goals in the tournament. They went on to win the bronze medal, adding two more trips to the podium for Notre Dame. Notre Dame's other two bronzes came from sisters Courtney and Kel- ley Hurley on the women's epee team in fencing. The Hur- leys both won cru- cial points to upset the Russian team in their final match and claim the USA's first women's medal in the event. Courtney, a current senior, scored the winning touch for the American team in overtime.
