POSTGAME REPORT WEEK 3 P ENN S TAT E 3 4 , NAVY 7 THE GAME AT A GLANCE INSIDE MAN O'Brien is swarmed by his players after Penn State's 34-7 rout of Navy Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Bill O'Brien and Penn State scuttle Navy to earn first win VICTORY, AT LAST MATT HERB | M A T T@B L U EWH I T E O N L I N E . c O M Now this is more like it. Penn State's 34-7 victory over Navy, marked by a succession of big plays on offense and big hits on defense, was the sort of celebra- tory moment that the Nittany Lions and their fans used to take for granted but had lived without for the better part of the past year. The entire Penn State community has been yearning for a return to normalcy, and against Navy, normalcy finally arrived – be- tween the white lines, anyway. The Lions doubled Navy's yardage total while building a 20-0 halftime lead and added to their edge in the second half, capping a strong, if not dominant, effort with a 74-yard touchdown by linebacker Mike Hull on a fum- ble return. "I feel very good for this football team," said S E P T E M B E R 1 5 , 2 0 1 2 1 B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . c O M Jonh Beale GOOD NEWS The Lions get the big- yardage "chunk" plays they've been looking for as the offense finally breaks out. BAD NEWS The score may have been lop- sided, but Navy ac- tually outgained the Lions by 30 yards. The triple-option produced 245 rush- ing yards. THE TAKEAWAYDon't look now, but Matt McGloin already has as many touchdown passes (eight) as he had all last season (and only one inter- ception). His matu- ration, coupled with the defense's pen- chant for creating turnovers, gives the Lions cause for opti- mism.
