www.BLUEANDGOLD.com SEPT. 18, 2017 9 UNDER THE DOME 5 Former Notre Dame coaches on the 1998 or 1999 staffs that were head coaches at least through the 2016 football season. They include head coach Bob Davie, who has rebuilt the New Mexico Lobos into respectability, three-time national champion Urban Meyer (Ohio State), Charlie Strong (South Florida, previously Texas and Louisville), Steve Addazio (Boston College) and Mike Sanford (Indiana State), who left his post this past winter to help his son, also Mike, who was hired as the new head coach at Western Kentucky after a two-year stint at Notre Dame in 2015-16. 7 Notre Dame representatives enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame after the Sept. 8-10 ceremony that included current Notre Dame women's basketball coach MUFFET MCGRAW — the first woman representative of the school. Already in prior to McGraw were 1923-43 Irish head coach George Keogan (inducted in 1961), who led Notre Dame to two Helms Foundation national titles; Elmer H. Ripley (1961), who coached Notre Dame in 1945-46 prior to a career that also included leading the Harlem Globetrotters; Edward "Moose" Krause (1976), a 1934 graduate and three-time All-American; Ray Meyer (1979), a 1938 graduate and longtime coach at DePaul; J. Walter Kennedy (1981), a 1934 graduate who became the school's sports information director and later the NBA commissioner from 1963-75; and Adrian Dantley (2008), a two-time All-American who played at Notre Dame from 1973-76 and was a six-time NBA All-Star who twice led the league in scoring. 10.5 Percent of the vote received by Notre Dame's Mike Brey — the second most — in a CBS Sports survey that polled more than 100 coaches in the game on the question, "Who is the high-major coach you genuinely believe does everything by the book and operates completely within the NCAA's rule book?" Michigan's John Beilein won the poll at 26.6 percent, while Virginia's Tony Bennett and Wisconsin's Greg Gard tied for third at 7.6 percent. Gonzaga's Mark Few rounded out the top five at 5.7 percent. 19 Recorded occasions since 1954 where Notre Dame had two players rush for at least 100 yards in the same game, with this year's Temple opener the first known contest with three: junior Josh Adams (161), junior Dexter Williams (124) and junior Brandon Wimbush (106). The first one recorded was the 23-17 win over USC on Nov. 27, 1954, when Jim Morse had 179 and Joe Heap 110. The most by a tandem with at least 100 apiece was 301 by Jerome Bettis (179) and Tony Brooks (122) in a 42-26 win at Stanford in 1991. 58 Former Notre Dame players from the state of Massachusetts who saw at least one second of action for the Fighting Irish in football, although there are none on the roster this year. Junior kicker Justin Yoon did attend Milton (Mass.) Academy, but his hometown is Nashville, Tenn. Notre Dame will play at Boston College Sept. 16. Two years ago, Massachusetts was ranked by Blueand- Gold.com as the 11th most productive state for producing Notre Dame football players. Among its many standouts were 1943 Heisman Trophy winner Angelo Bertelli (Springfield) at quarterback and 1977 Walter Camp Award recipient Ken MacAfee (tight end) at tight end. 629 Rushing yards by Notre Dame during a 63-0 victory against Drake in 1931, a figure that remains the most in school history. The question of what is the highest rushing total in a game by the Fighting Irish was asked numer- ous times after Notre Dame compiled 422 in this year's opener against Temple. The Notre Dame record book also lists 597 rushing yards against Navy in 1969 (a 47-0 win) as the "modern" record, defined generally as post-World War II era. The 720 yards total offense versus the Midshipmen on that same day remains the most in the program's history. BY THE NUMBERS ✦ Sponsored by: NotreDameTickets.com PHOTO BY JOE RAYMOND
