www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 9, 2017 15 THEY SAID IT "Obviously as the player, there's nobody better in the country at what he does. You can try and scour the country, but I'll bet you a lot of money you're not going to find somebody better than Quen - ton Nelson, and that's because of the way he works, the way he leads, and the way he just goes out and balls. "You have to commend Q for the amount of work he's done for four years now to put himself in the position that he's in. The sky's the limit with him. He's just phenomenal across the board." Fifth-year senior left tackle Mike McGlinchey on senior left guard Quenton Nelson "Cooling off. The biggest demerit for Kelly so far this season might be a post- game exchange with a reporter. Notre Dame is a better, more cohesive team, especially on defense under first-year coordinator Mike Elko. A one-point home loss to Georgia doesn't look too bad with the Bulldogs now in the top 10. Kelly is even dancing in the locker room after wins." — ESPN's Adam Rittenberg on Brian Kelly's trend on ESPN's college football hot seat update (Kelly moved from No. 6 to No. 10) "How he takes the weeks after a loss. He doesn't take them very well. He wants to come in each and every day to get better. He is fighting to get better for himself and with the team. This offense has only been to- gether since OTAs [organized team activities — preseason practice sessions before training camp opens] as a group and a unit, and really all together since the last preseason game. We are young within the offense, and we are still learning. We are going to be scary in November and December, and that is when the good teams get great." — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Kenny Britt on what he feels is most encouraging in regards to former Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer (ClevelandBrowns.com) "Mike Brey raved about Gibbs' commitment to conditioning during the July recruiting circuit, and that will be a critical component for both him and the Irish next season. Notre Dame has never played that deep of a rotation under Brey's watch. Gibbs' ability to log major minutes alongside both Matt Farrell and Rex Pflueger within the confines of a three-guard alignment is massive. After averaging just 4.7 points last season as a freshman, expect this New Jersey native to be in double figures as a sophomore." — College basketball insider Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports on Irish sophomore guard T.J. Gibbs being one of his breakout players for the 2017-18 season "Brandon Wimbush had done a lot more with his legs than his arm this season, but that changed in Notre Dame's 38-18 win over Michigan State. Wimbush went 14 for 20 for 173 yards after completing just 51 percent of his passes over the first three weeks. In those first three games, 38 percent of his passes were 10 or more yards downfield, and he completed only 40 percent of those throws. Saturday's game plan kept most of Wimbush's passes short — 16 of 20 were less than 10 yards downfield — and he was much more effective throwing deep, going 3 for 4 for 88 yards when throwing at least 10 yards downfield." — Jerry Mills of ESPN on naming Wimbush one of the top quarterback performers in week four OF THE WEEK "Sr. LB @GreerMartini48 has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
