www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 9, 2017 17 UNDER THE DOME 75 Years Ago: Oct. 10, 1942 Junior Angelo Bertelli becomes the first player in Notre Dame history to toss four touchdown passes (while kicking three extra points, too) in a game and completes 10 consecutive passes — finishing 14‑of‑20 passing for 233 yards — as the Irish romp to a 27‑0 victory versus Stanford. Second‑year Irish head coach Frank Leahy had been castigated for changing the offense from the traditional Notre Dame Box to the new T‑formation to take advantage of Bertelli's passing skills, and a 0‑1‑1 start and poor offense put enough stress on Leahy to hospitalize him and have assistant Ed McKeever serve as the acting coach versus Stanford. Wrote The South Bend Tribune: "A week ago last night the Downtown Quarterbacks were yelling mur‑ der: 'Let's fire Leahy; let's fire McKeever; and let's junk the T‑formation.' Last night they were singing the praises of Leahy, McKeever and said they knew the T‑formation would produce results." The 10 straight completions would not be matched until 36 years later by Joe Montana in a 1978 win at Georgia Tech, and the four TD passes weren't duplicated until Daryle Lamonica achieved it in a 43‑22 victory versus Pitt in 1962. It was not surpassed until 2005 by Brady Quinn. 60 Years Ago: Oct. 12, 1957 After its worst finish ever (2‑8) a year earlier, Notre Dame begins the season 3‑0 with a 23‑21 vic‑ tory versus No. 10 Army in Philadelphia in front of 95,000 to rise to No. 7 in the Associated Press poll. The Irish also pull off the biggest comeback in their history at the time after trailing 21‑7 (the previous highest deficit that was turned into a win was 13‑0 at Ohio State in 1935). Fullback Nick Pietrosante begins the comeback with a 65‑yard touchdown run. Early in the fourth quarter, halfback Dick Lynch scores from the 1‑yard line, but sophomore Monty Stickles misses the extra point to keep the Irish trailing 21‑20. A Pietrosante interception on a pass de‑ flected by Frank Geremia then sets up Stickles' 29‑yard field goal with about six and a half minutes left. 35 Years Ago: Oct. 9, 1982 Junior kicker Mike Johnston drills a 32‑yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the game to lead Notre Dame to a 16‑14 victory against No. 17 Miami in the rain. It improves the Irish to 4‑0 and moves them up to No. 9 in the AP poll, one year after coach Howard Schnellenberger's Hurricanes had routed the Irish 37‑15 to cap head coach Gerry Faust's first season at 5‑6, the program's first losing season in 18 years. Replacing the injured Jim Kelly, Miami quarterback Mark Richt (now its head coach) launched a 79‑ yard score to Rocky Belk for a 14‑10 lead in the fourth quarter, but a 42‑yard field goal by Johnston and a fourth‑and‑one stop by the Irish on a Richt sneak set up the game‑winner. 10 Years Ago: Oct. 6, 2007 The worst start ever to a Notre Dame season ends when the 0‑5 Fighting Irish pull off a surprising 20‑6 victory at 22‑point favorite UCLA in the venerable Rose Bowl. The Bruins double Notre Dame's total offense output — 282‑140 — but the Irish finish with an astound‑ ing 7‑0 turnover advantage. With UCLA's top two quarter‑ backs sidelined because of inju‑ ries, sophomore walk‑on McLeod Bethel‑Thompson struggles against the Irish defense led by linebacker Maurice Crum Jr., who produces a school‑record four takeaways. Crum intercepts two passes and re‑ covers two fumbles, returning one 34 yards for a touchdown during a 17‑point third quarter. An earlier interception by safety David Bru‑ ton sets up a two‑yard drive for the other Irish TD. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 6‑12 NOTRE DAME BLANKETS *Please add sales tax in IN, MI, and NC Call for best shipping rates on multiple items!
