He finished his career with 2,029 rushing yards, even more than Hunter (1,894). 4. Prince Shembo (Charlotte, 2010-13) Shembo was voted Notre Dame's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2013, highlighted by 17 quarterback hurries. The three-year starter at outside linebacker also excelled for the stellar 2012 defense with 51 tackles, including 7.5 sacks. The fourth-round NFL Draft pick had 145 stops during his career with 19.5 sacks. 5. Kinnon Tatum (Fayetteville, 1993-96) A fierce and fearless tackler at in- side linebacker, Tatum finished sec- ond in stops in 1995 (82) and first in 1996 (77) on Holtz's final two teams. He became a third-round NFL pick. Waymer is the lone Irish player from North Carolina drafted higher than Tatum, who played four years in the NFL. 6. Robert Blanton (Matthews, 2008-11) Similar to current Irish sophomore Julian Love, Blanton was a play- maker at corner, nickel and special teams all four of his seasons at Notre Dame with 194 stops, including 19.5 for loss. He intercepted two passes each year (eight total), returning one for a score in a 2008 win versus Pur- due, and also tallied on a punt he blocked versus Utah in 2010 to pro- pel a 28-3 victory. The fifth-round pick signed with the Buffalo Bills in September and is in his sixth NFL season. 7. Matthias Farley (Charlotte, 2011-15) Another versatile DB similar to Waymer and Blanton, Farley began his career at receiver but was pressed into action as a starting sophomore safety for the 12-1 Cinderella team in 2012. His stats nearly mirrored Blan- ton's with 190 career tackles (10.5 for loss) and eight interceptions. Although not drafted, he has be- come one of the top defenders for the Indianapolis Colts. 8. Romeo Okwara (Charlotte, 2012-15) Like Farley, he went undrafted but has latched on with the New York Giants the past two years and has an opportunity for a long career in the NFL. He was only 20 years old when he graduated from Notre Dame and just beginning to reach his potential. Okwara finished his senior year with 49 total tackles, 13.5 stops for loss and nine sacks. 9. Greer Martini (Cary, 2014-present) Depending on how the rest of this season transpires, the linebacker Martini (who played his high school football in Virginia despite residing in North Carolina) could move up a little higher. He joins Waymer and Farley as the lone captains from the state. With 116 career tackles enter- ing this season, he has a chance to become the first from the state to eclipse 200 for the Irish. 10. Norm Odyniec (Greensboro, 1956-58) A backup most of his career with the Irish, he rushed for 354 yards and two touchdowns during his career. Odyniec set a Senior Bowl record with 192 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and was drafted by the Washington Redskins, Remark- ably, he was one of three Irish full- backs named MVP in their 1959 all- star games, joining Nick Pietrosante (East-West Shrine Game) and Ron Toth (Blue-Gray Game). Odyniec became a prominent vascular surgeon in the Washing- ton, D.C., area and did work for the American College of Surgeons on cancer. ✦ MEMORABILIA ST.
