www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 30, 2017 37 COACHING Dave Doeren was an impressive 23-4 in his two years at Northern Illinois (2011-12), including a bid to the Orange Bowl, which earned him the job at NC State. Now in his fifth season in Raleigh, Doeren has gone a so-so 31-27 and has yet to win more than eight games in a season. It would appear that Doeren has the Wolfpack on the verge of a breakthrough. NC State will enter Notre Dame Stadium with a 6-1 record, and the four Atlantic Coast Conference wins already marked a single-season high for Doeren. Now in his eighth year at Notre Dame, Kelly is looking to put together his third double-digit win total in South Bend (12-1 in 2012 and 10-3 in 2015) while coming off the 4-8 nightmare last season. Doeren has a 1-0 record against Kelly, with NC State besting the Irish 10-3 last season in Raleigh in a game played during Hurricane Matthew. Advantage: Notre Dame INTANGIBLES NC State is a veteran team that is playing with a great deal of confidence. After beating Florida State on the road, the Wolfpack will likely enter Notre Dame Stadium with the belief it can topple the Irish as well. The Wolfpack are 2-0 on the road this season and have been decent on the road during the Doeren era. NC State went 2-3 on the road last season and 4-2 in 2015. Under Kelly Notre Dame has gone 22-8 against teams currently in the ACC, and 7-2 at home. This is an evenly matched game in many regards, but Notre Dame's experience in such contests and the contest being at Notre Dame Stadium should give the Irish the edge.
