14 OCT. 30, 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Emma Albrecht — Golf The junior from Ormond Beach, Fla., tied for first place at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational Oct. 6‑8 in Lexington, Ky. She carded rounds of 70, 69 and 73 to give her an overall score of 5‑under‑par 211, leading the Irish to the team cham‑ pionship and giving her a tie for medalist honors. The 211 from Albrecht was one stroke off her career‑best 210, set in September 2017, and was the seventh‑best 54‑hole score in Notre Dame history. Dylan St. Cyr — Hockey The freshman from Northville, Mich., was crucial in No. 4 Notre Dame's 2‑2 tie with visiting No. 1 Denver Oct. 13. He recorded 46 saves against the nation's best team, in‑ cluding four late stops to preserve the tie for Notre Dame. The performance came after a 34‑save shut‑ out against Alabama Huntsville in his first ca‑ reer start Oct. 7. St. Cyr made saves on the first 10 Denver shots to extend his streak to 44 before the Pioneers finally found the back of the net. Sydney Kuhn — Volleyball I n N o t re D a m e 's 3 ‑ 0 win over visiting Clemson Oct. 15, the senior from W i c h i ta , Ka n . , l e d t h e Irish in kills with 12. In the match, she posted a hit‑ ting percentage of .310, her highest mark of the season. Kuhn also added four digs and one block in the dominant Irish win. Amanda Sirico — Fencing The junior from Bowie, Md., finished in sec‑ ond place in the Division One Women's Epee in the U.S. Fencing October North American Cup Oct. 13‑16 at Anaheim, Calif. With her second‑place fin‑ ish, Sirico joined 2010 Notre Dame graduate Kelly Hurley (first place) and 2013 Notre Dame grad Court‑ ney Hurley (third place) on the medal podium. TOP OF THE CLASS ✦ GIMME FIVE Entering last weekend's game against USC, Notre Dame junior running back Josh Adams was only 139 rushing yards away from climbing to No. 6 on the Fighting Irish all‑time chart for yards gained on the ground, surpassing Jerome Heavens' (1975‑78) mark of 2,682. After that, the next step for Adams is to be‑ come only the sixth back in school history to reach the 3,000‑yard milestone. Should he opt to return for his senior year in 2018, Adams could become only the third to reach 4,000. The current top five at Notre Dame comes with a caveat. Whereas No. 4 Darius Walker (2004‑06) had his three bowl games included (a total of 261 yards) the other four and Heavens do not. CHARTING THE IRISH IRISH WINNING BIG Notre Dame finished the first half of the 2017 season in impressive fashion, posting a 5‑1 record. Its lone loss was a one‑point defeat versus Georgia (20‑19) Sept. 9. Otherwise, it has been smooth sailing for the Irish on the field. They outscored their opponents by an average of 28.0 points in their five victories, with the closest contest being the 38‑18 romp over Michigan State in East Lansing Sept. 16. Two of the five wins crossed the 30‑point threshold — 49‑16 over Temple in the season opener Sept. 2 and 52‑17 versus Miami (Ohio) Sept. 30. Notre Dame was ranked in the top 10 in the country for margin of victory (23.2 points per game), which would tie the program's highest finish under head coach Brian Kelly. The Irish finished eighth in 2012, during the program's run to the BCS National Championship Game. The Irish were one of eight Power Five teams in the country to have an average margin of victory of 20 points or higher. With an even split between home and road games through six contests, Notre Dame averaged a 24.0‑point margin of victory on the road while posting a 22.3‑point mark at home. MOVING?
