BACKFIELD ALIGNMENTS Notre Dame will generally line the running backs up three ways: • The offset alignment where the back is to either side of the quarter- back in a shotgun formation. • The Pistol alignment where the back is directly behind the quarter- back in a shotgun formation. • The I formation with the quar- terback under center and the back directly behind him. Notre Dame's most-used align- ment is the offset look (63.4 percent). It has also been the most effective, av- eraging 7.6 yards per play. All seven runs of 60 or more yards came from an offset alignment. The Irish have been more efficient from the Pistol (fewer negative plays and fewer runs of two yards or less), but it has not been as explosive. Notre Dame's under center num- bers are understandably lower — it is primarily used in a short-yardage situation.
