82 ■ THE WOLFPACKER WOLFPACK BASKETBALL Thad Matta in early June and subsequently hired head coach Chris Holtmann away from Butler. NC State was also in the pro- cess of hiring Hamilton and the opportunity to be reunited in Raleigh made for an easy decision for Beverly. He finished out sum- mer school at Ohio State and transferred to NC State. "The relationship that we developed at Hargrave is unbelievable," Beverly said in a previous interview. "It's still there. … Once I did hear from them, it was almost like a dream come true to be able to play in the same system again." Keatts noted that Matta wrote a letter on Beverly's behalf during the appeal process noting that the only reason Beverly enrolled in summer school was on his staff's behest after it had received an earlier vote of con- fidence in the spring before Ohio State did an about face and made its coaching change. "It's a tough deal for him because, I said this all along, I don't consider Braxton Bev- erly as a transfer," Keatts added. "I consider Devon Daniels and C.J. Bryce a transfer. Both of those guys competed for another university last year, and they were both full- time students. I think Braxton is getting held up on a technicality because he got athletic- related aid. "My suggestion has always been if that's the case, and that's the only reason he has been held up, give him the opportunity to pay that back. Certainly in our situation we lost a young man who, when I took the job, decided he wanted to go elsewhere. We released him. "We also got Lavar Batts in a similar situ- ation. If he did not start summer school or Ohio State did not pay for summer school, he would be eligible anywhere in the coun- try. To me, that doesn't sound right." The 6-0, 180-pound Beverly, who is from Hazard, Ky., once made 14 three-pointers in a game en route to 70 points at Hargrave. Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland and VCU all reached out after he was released by Ohio State. Omer Yurtseven Added To Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Watch List NC State sophomore Omer Yurtseven was named to the watch list for the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced 20 players for the watch list Oct. 20, for the award that honors the top center in college basketball. Yurtseven appeared in 22 contests and made 14 starts for the Wolfpack last season. He averaged 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for NC State during his rookie campaign. Yurtseven missed the first nine games of the season due to an NCAA suspension. He scored 12 points in a win over Appalachian State in his debut. He made his first career start and scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in a win over Rider Dec. 28. He recorded his first career double-dou- ble with 12 points and a season-best 16 re- bounds in a win against Pittsburgh. This is the second consecutive season Yurtseven has appeared on the initial watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. The watch list will be narrowed down to 10 players in mid-February. In March, five finalists will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame's selection commit- tee. The winner of the 2018 Kareem Abdul- Jabbar Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show April 6 in Los Angeles. ■ 2017-18 NC State Men's Basketball Schedule Date Opponent (TV) Time (ET) Nov. 3 Mars Hill! 7 p.m. Nov. 10 VMI (ACCNE) 7 p.m. Nov. 12 Charleston Southern (ACCNE) 4 p.m. Nov. 14 Bryant (ACCNE) 7 p.m. Nov. 16 Presbyterian (ACCNE) 7 p.m. Nov. 22 vs. Arizona^ (TBD) 7 p.m. Nov. 23 vs. No. Iowa or SMU^ (TBD) 3 or 9:30 p.m. Nov. 24 vs. Villanova, Western Kentucky, Purdue or Tennessee^ (TBD) TBD Nov. 29 Penn State# (ESPNU) 7:15 p.m. Dec. 2 South Carolina State (RSN) 12 p.m. Dec. 9 UMKC (ACCNE) 2 p.m. Dec. 16 UNC Greensboro (RSN) 12 p.m. Dec. 19 Robert Morris (ACCNE) 7 p.m. Dec. 22 Jacksonville (RSN) 7 p.m. Dec. 30 at Clemson (RSN) TBD Jan. 3 at Notre Dame (ACCN) 9 p.m. Jan. 6 Duke (ESPN) 2 or 8 p.m. Jan. 11 Clemson (ESPN/2) 9 p.m. Jan. 14 at Virginia (ESPNU) 6 p.m. Jan. 18 Wake Forest (ACCN) 8 p.m. Jan. 21 Miami (ACCN) 12 p.m. Jan. 24 at Pittsburgh (RSN) 9 p.m. Jan. 27 at North Carolina (CBS) 12 p.m. Feb. 3 Notre Dame (ESPN/2) 12 p.m. Feb. 7 at Virginia Tech (RSN) 9 p.m. Feb. 10 North Carolina (ACCN) 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at Syracuse (ACCN) 9 p.m. Feb. 17 at Wake Forest (ACCN) 4 p.m. Feb. 20 Boston College (RSN) 7 p.m. Feb. 25 Florida State (ESPNU) 6 p.m. March 1 at Georgia Tech (ACCN) 8 p.m. March 3 Louisville (ESPN/2) 6 p.m. March 6-10 ACC Tournament$ (ACCN/ESPN) TBD !
