& VAF news notables DECEMBER 2017 27 members of the game Football 2017 Boston College 10/21 (Homecomings) Mel Mitchell Charlottesville, VA UVA Golf Facility Groundbreaking On Friday, November 10, UVA Men's and Women's Golf programs marked history with a UVA Golf Facility Groundbreaking Ceremony. Members of both golf teams, staff from the Virginia Athletics Founda- tion, UVA Foundation, Boar's Head Resort and Birdwood as well as several donors to the facility at- tended the ceremony at Birdwood Golf Course. Dirk Katstra and Craig Littlepage shared appreciation for the collaborative effort of many UVA staff and generous donors who helped make this celebration pos- sible, shared the importance of the facility to the athletics department and recognized the incredible lead- ership by both head coaches, Bowen Sargent and Kim Lewellen. The coaches revealed how the new train- ing and development center for both programs will greatly impact the stu- dent-athlete experience and recruit- ing process. This facility provides a remarkable home base for the golf teams that will allow the coaches to develop the student-athletes year- round featuring many helpful ameni- ties – six indoor hitting bays, offices for the head and assistant coaches, men's and women's player locker rooms and lounges, putting studio, club repair room, conference and meeting space, nutrition stations and two video analysis bays. On behalf of both teams, Danny Walker and Anna Redding shared the play- ers' excitement to finally have a home at their course. Bowen Sargent, Kim Lewellen, Danny Walker, Anna Redding and Tom Dean, the lead donor to the fa- cility, participated in the ceremonial first shot (pictured above). The se- quenced shot served as the ground- breaking celebration on the driving range where the new facility will be constructed. Kiser Named a Finalist for the 2017 Campbell Trophy Award Recognizes the Nation's Top Football Scholar-Athlete Virginia senior inside linebacker Micah Kiser has been named a finalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Founda- tion and College Hall of Fame. The award recognizes an individual as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Selected from a nationwide pool of 181 semifinalists from among all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, Kiser is one of 13 finalists for the award. Kiser will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. Along with the other 12 finalists, Kiser will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 5. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 28th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. The event, which will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown, will be live streamed on ESPN3 starting at 8:30 p.m. ET. The trophy is named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, the former chair - man of Intuit, a former player and head coach at Columbia University, and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal. A total distribution of $241,000 in scholarships will be awarded, pushing the program's all-time distributions to more than $11.3 million. Kiser is UVA's fifth all-time finalist for the Campbell Trophy. Stephen Phelan Jr. (1997), Tiki Barber (1996), Tom Burns (1993) and Gary Cuozzo (1962) join Kiser as the five all-time Campbell Trophy finalists from Virginia.
