30 CAVALIER CORNER With UVA's come-from-behind win against Georgia Tech, Virginia Football is bowl eligible. Discussions are underway for postseason bowl preparation and compe- tition. Below is an overview of what bowl preparation looks like from an NCAA compliance standpoint. Specifi- cally, eligibility requirements for student-athletes to participate in the bowl and what expenses/benefits the student-athletes may receive from UVA and the bowl. The NCAA legislates that in order for a student-athlete to receive travel expenses to the bowl site, participate in practices at the bowl site and play in the bowl game itself, team members must pass 6-credit hours in the fall 2017 term. Some exceptions apply if a student-athlete is en- rolled in less than 6-credit hours in their last semester at the University. The compliance office will work with the athletics academic affairs office and University Registrar to certify the football student-athlete's eligibility for the bowl game once the fall 2017 term concludes. NCAA legislation also allows the athletics department to provide actual and necessary expenses (transportation, housing and meals) for eligible team members. Transportation may be provided for student-athletes to travel to and from the bowl site from either Grounds or their homes if they do not travel with the team. Addi- tionally, lodging and meal expenses may be provided to student-athletes in Charlottesville during practice after fall exams conclude and at the bowl site if otherwise eligible. Finally, NCAA legislation allows each student-athlete to receive certain benefits and awards from the team's participation in the bowl game. Each student-athlete may receive six complimentary admissions to use for their family and/or guests. Additionally, each student-athlete may receive $30 per day of incidental expense money to cover expenses not itemized at the bowl site (up to 10-days if at the bowl site that long). Finally, each eligible student-athlete may receive postseason bowl participa - tion awards from UVA and the bowl. The maximum value of the awards may not exceed $400 from UVA and $550 from the bowl. A: I grew up two hours from UVA and often vis- ited Charlottesville for UVA football games and lacrosse camps. I absolutely fell in love with the grounds and school. I was especially impressed with UVA's athletics programs and knew from a young age that I would be lucky to become a Hoo! Q: Currently an Account Manager for Google, what was your experience like navigating the athletics and academic rigors of UVA? A: My experience as a UVA student-athlete pre- pared me well for Google, as I was constantly challenged to succeed on and off the field. During my four years at UVA, I was a mem- ber of the women's lacrosse team, a Class of 2014 Trustee, on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a member of the Student-Athlete Honor Committee and a volunteer tutor. Given my involvement, time management and orga- nization were critical in accomplishing my goals and ultimately preparing me for Google and beyond. Q: Looking back on your time at UVA, what memories stick out most? A: I have so many great memories from UVA, but the one that sticks out the most was during my fourth year when our lacrosse team made it to the Final Four tournament after beating UNC in a close game at their home turf in Chapel Hill. Q: You've worked in the Midwest and now the Northeast since graduating in 2014, what advice do you have for young alumni or current student-athletes as they begin their careers? A: Networking is important! One of the great- est things about UVA is the strong alumni network. Reach out to as many UVA alumni as possible, even if it is just to learn about what they do and how they got there. Taking advan- tage of that network will really help you learn more about what opportunities exist and what your interests are. Q: What are your goals or long term plans? A: I'm currently very happy in my role at Google. That being said, one day I would abso- lutely love to be able to start my own business with my two older sisters. Q: You've been supporting Virginia Athletics since you graduated in 2014, why do you continue to give back? A: I love giving back to a program and school that gave me so much and really shaped who I am today.
