MAY 2018 THE WOLVERINE 13   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY 2 U-M players were named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's All-Region team for the first time in school his- tory, when senior guard Katelynn Flaherty and junior center Hallie Thome were named to the All-Region 4 squad March 22, which secured at least honorable mention All-America honors for both. Flaherty is the first three-time All-Region honoree in program history. 6 Times a school has made the Final Four in men's basketball and ice hockey — Michigan has done so four times (1964, 1992, 1993 and 2018), while Michigan State has accomplished the feat twice (1999 and 2001). It was the basketball team's first Final Four since 2013 and the hockey team's deepest NCAA Tournament run since 2011. 11th Is Michigan's national ranking in ESPN's Football Power Index, which "measures a team's true strength on a net points scale; expected point margin vs. average opponent on neutral field." The formula projects U-M with at least an 89.5-percent chance of winning in six contests next season, while the Wolverines boast a 58.8-percent chance of victory or better in all but three upcoming contests — at Notre Dame Sept. 1 (32.1), at Michigan State Oct. 20 (42.3) and at Ohio State Nov. 24 (31.9). Despite Penn State having a higher FPI (eighth), the Wolver- ines are slight favorites due to being at home Nov. 3; FPI gives U-M a 58.8 percent chance of winning that one. 17 Wins in a row, including the first eight Big Ten tilts, for the baseball team through a 6-3 win over Maryland April 15. It marks the best streak under sixth- year head coach Erik Bakich and the pro- gram's longest since winning 18 straight in 1988. 15.3, 7.0 Were junior forward Moritz Wagner's points and rebounds per game averages during the 2018 postseason. He totaled 63 points and 26 rebounds in four games while being named the Most Outstanding Player at the Big Ten Tournament, and then added 90 points and 44 boards in six NCAA Tournament contests. His 24 points and 15 rebounds in the 69-57 win over Loyola-Chicago made him one of just three players ever — along with Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Larry Bird — to have at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a national semifinal game. In seven postseason games last year, Wagner totaled just 74 points and 23 rebounds (averages of 10.6 and 3.3, respectively). 23 Big Ten championship-winning teams have been coached by women's gymnastics mentor BEV PLOCKI, after her 2018 squad won its fifth conference crown in a row. The triumph moved Plocki into a tie with former Indiana swimming coach Doc Counsilman for the most titles in any sport in league his- tory. En route to its latest title, the team claimed a pair of indi- vidual championships, giving it 93 in program annals, 55 more than second-place Minnesota (38). $400,000 Less than what Jim McElwain and his family paid for their Gainesville home in 2015 ($1.8 million) is what they accepted for it in late January. The wheelchair-friendly house's ramps, lift and wide hallways, which were installed by a previous owner, were perfect for the Staab family, which has two disabled children with dystonia — a neurological disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions. The Staabs made the offer before the home was even listed on the market or they knew what it was worth. "Because the McElwains have a good heart," real estate agent Daurine Wehbe told TampaBay.com of why the coach and his family said yes to the below- m a r k e t o f - fer. "No one knows that. No one ap- preciates that." By The NUMBERS
