28 CAVALIER CORNER As a result of the ongoing federal probe on cor- ruption and fraud within men's basketball, the NCAA adopted several rules changes identified by the Commission on College Basketball. A total of 14 proposals were adopted by the NCAA Board of Governors in August 2018. Seven of those 14 rule changes were administrative and "behind the scenes", while the remaining seven rule changes im- pact the men's basketball program directly. Below is an overview of three of those seven rule changes. This article will provide an overview of the rule changes within the amateurism area: 1. Enrolled UVA men's basketball student-athletes (SA) may enter the NBA draft each year and can remain eligible the following year if the SA: i. submits an evaluation request to the NBA undergraduate advisory committee; ii. requests his name be removed from draft list and declares in writing his intent to return to UVA within 10-days of the conclusion of the draft combine; a. Declaration is submitted to Carla Williams; iii. is not drafted. 2. Enrolled UVA men's basketball SA's may enter the draft and attend the NBA combine and can remain eligible if the SA: i. requests an undergraduate evaluation from the NBA; ii. is not drafted; iii. submits declaration to return to UVA by 5:00 p.m. the Monday following the NBA draft. 3. Enrolled UVA men's basketball SA's may be rep- resented by an agent and can remain eligible if: i. The agent is certified by the NCAA/NBA Play- ers Association; ii. The activity between the SA and agent does not occur until the conclusion of the team's season; iii. The SA does not miss class; iv. The SA does not sign a contract with a pro- fessional team, the contract with the certi- fied agent is terminated before the SA's next term of enrollment at UVA. The next compliance corner article will cover the remaining four rule changes. The remaining four changes impact recruiting and degree completion opportunities for former men's and women's bas- ketball student-athletes.
