In comparison, the entire Southeastern Conference had only three defensive linemen with at least 20 quarterback pressures during the same time frame. Advantage: Notre Dame NOTRE DAME RUNNING GAME VS. NORTHWESTERN RUN DEFENSE This is the tightest matchup on paper between Notre Dame and Northwestern. Both squads ranked in the middle of the pack entering the Oct. 27 weekend, and both were largely inconsis- tent through each of their first seven games. Northwestern ranked 49th nationally in yards allowed per game on the ground (143.3) and 70th in yards allowed per rush (4.2). Three of North- western's first seven opponents were held to less than 100 yards, and only Purdue topped 5.0 yards per carry (8.1). But the Wildcats surrendered 231 yards in a comeback win over Nebraska, 202 yards in a victory over the Boilermakers and 180 yards in a loss to Michigan. Notre Dame ranked 60th in rushing yards per game (179.1) and 80th in yards per rush (4.2). The Fighting Irish offense went for 272 yards in a 38-17 win over then No. 7-ranked Stanford, 245 yards in a 22-17 victory over Vanderbilt and 241 yards in a 56-27 win at Wake Forest. Those three games were in succession. However, in three of its seven contests, the Notre Dame ground game was held to less than 140 yards. Advantage: Even Junior defensive end Joe Gaziano led the Big Ten with nine sacks in 2017 and had 4.5 quarterback takedowns through seven games this season. PHOTO BY STEPHEN J.
