cavalier sports APRIL 2019 9 getting to know Redshirt Fourth-Year Track And Field Athlete Mia Barron R edshirt fourth-year long and triple jumper Mia Barron earned All-ACC honors in the 2018 indoor long jump, the 2018 indoor triple jump and the 2017 indoor triple jump. In addition she was an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier in each event in 2017 and 2018. My advice to student-athletes is: Just try to get the most of every opportunity you have at UVA, both athletically and aca- demically. The students at UVA are fortunate to have a well- rounded experience. I think we should try to take advantage of all the great opportunities UVA has to offer like fostering relationships with your teammates, coaches and the community as well as growing from those experiences. You also have an opportunity to have one of the great educations in the world. The best thing about UVA is: The people. I've been for- tunate enough to foster relationships with people all over the world. I've been able to broaden my worldviews. Why I chose UVA: I was looking for a school with great athletics in a Power Five conference. I'm from Minnesota so I was looking for something in a different area. I thought my decision would be hard, but I really connected with the people I met. I felt it would be a great place to spend the next five years of my life. What I like most about track and field: There isn't a limit on what you're trying to achieve. There's always something to improve on. You can set a goal for yourself, but then there will be a next goal to set. The highlight of my athletic career: At the end of my first year I blew out an ankle and had reconstructive surgery. I was chasing that 20-foot mark in the long jump. Coming off my redshirt season we had our Virginia Challenge Meet (April 2016) and I jumped 20 feet, five inches for the first time. I remember literally almost tearing up on the track. I didn't feel I would be as powerful and wouldn't achieve that mark I had been chasing for a long time. The most important thing I've learned from track and field: Figuring out why you do what you do. Track is an in- dividual sport, but I like figuring out how you can impact the lives of your teammates and coaches in a positive way. My post-college ambition is: Long-term, I'm trying to fig- ure out if I want to continue in intercollegiate athletics or be a VP of marketing. I definitely want to stay in athletics, espe- cially in football. — Mike Scandura Barron earned All-ACC accolades in both the indoor long jump and indoor triple jump in 2018.
