26 ■ THE WOLFPACKER TRACKING THE PACK "If you have a vision for where you want to go, the process and the path that you have to take to get there doesn't mat- ter. I've been playing in the ACC for three years now, and people are staring at you every day. You just have to take that same approach from that level and turn it up a notch at this level." ■ Former NC State wing TORIN DORN on chasing his professional dreams (The Charlotte Observer) "I'd say I bring a gritty attitude to the field and a grinder's mentality. I model myself after Trea Turner after going to NC State and watching how all the coaches built him up. I try to model my game after him." — Ex-NC State shortstop Will Wilson after getting drafted at No. 15 overall in the first round to the Los Angeles Angels (MLB Network) PACK QUOTES Timara Chapman, Track & Field The rising sophomore from Raleigh finished second in the heptathlon at the USA Track and Field Under-20 National Championship June 21-23 in Miramar, Fla. Chapman's perfor- mance earned her a ticket to the Pan Am U20 Championships July 18-21 in Costa Rica. She was named the 2019 ACC Women's Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year. She finished third in the ACC Indoor Championships in the pentathlon and was also third in the outdoor conference meet in the heptathlon. Jaeda Daniel, Tennis NC State's burgeoning women's tennis program made a significant addition for next season when the Auburn transfer announced she would spend her last two seasons in Raleigh. The native of Newtown Square, Pa., was No. 94 in this year's final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I singles rankings and has some impressive wins to her credit, including defeating Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba during her freshman year. Perez-Somarriba finished No. 2 after previously being the top ranked player. Daniel will join Anna Rogers (No. 13) and Alana Smith (No. 69) as ranked singles players for NC State. Savannah Shaw, Cross Country After a solid freshman year, Shaw appears poised for a break- out sophomore campaign. She earned a spot on the United State's U20 National Team with a top-six performance (crossing the finish line in fifth place) at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships in February at Tallahassee, Fla. In March, Shaw traveled to Aarhus, Denmark, where she finished 53rd overall at the IAAF World Cross County Championships and had the top time for the United States team. Benjamin Shipp, Golf After posting a per-round stroke average of 71.06 this season (sixth best in history at NC State), the Duluth, Ga., native and rising senior was named an honorable mention All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America, joining his senior teammate Stephen Franken. Shipp won two tournaments, the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in October and the Puerto Rico Classic in February, and added three more top-10 finishes. His career stroke average of 71.66 is fourth best in school history. Nick Swiney, Baseball Over his final 12 appearances, the rising junior left-handed pitcher from Huntersville, N.C. was a dominant presence on the mound. He threw 36 innings out of the pen and surrendered a paltry 14 hits and eight runs (seven earned) for a 1.75 earned run average. He also struck out 59 batters while walking 17 and made his case for being a potential starter next season. In the Greenville Regional of the NCAA Tournament, Swiney pitched both games and threw six and one-third innings of one-hit baseball, walking five and striking out 12. ■ PACK PERFORMERS PHOTO BY KEN MARTIN 29 Ranking for NC State power forward Pat Andree among graduate transfers by Stadium.com writer Jeff Goodman.
