96 ■ THE WOLFPACKER FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2019 Alcohol Sales Now Allowed At Carter-Finley Stadium On June 18, the North Carolina Senate passed a bill that would allow state uni- versities to sell beer and wine on game days by a vote of 33-12. The House had already passed the bill, House Bill 389, by a similarly bipartisan vote of 88-24. Governor Roy Cooper signed the bill into law June 26. Before that, state universities were not allowed to sell or permit consumption of alcohol on campuses except in certain areas of NC State's Carter-Finley Sta- dium and UNC's Kenan Stadium that are limited to high-end boosters. NC State is expected to move quickly. There were already reports of a custom- made beer in partnership with New Bel- gium Brewing called "Old Tuffy" with the strutting wolf featured on the can. New Belgium has a similar agreement with Colorado State. Over the past 10 years, the number of universities selling alcohol at games have grown from fewer than a dozen to more than 50. The SEC lifted a ban on alcohol sales for its schools in May. Research has shown positive results from schools that sell in-stadium alcohol. West Virginia and Oregon both had de- clines in alcohol-related incidents. WVU reported more than $3 million in revenue from alcohol sales from 2011- 16. Oregon went from selling alcohol in exclusive areas to throughout the stadium in 2018, and sales were up 61 percent through the first five home games. New NC State director of athletics Boo Corrigan said that it was too early to discuss if beer sales would eliminate the halftime pass-outs NC State provides fans. ■ The Wolfpack's Chiropractic & Sports Medicine Consultant for Over 20 Years Can Now Be Yours!!
