NOVEMBER 2019 THE WOLVERINE 27   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL away at the running game and got that going." There were six dropped passes, however, including a fourth-down muff in the end zone by sophomore Ronnie Bell that would have tied the game. That's one area in which the Wolverines needed to improve sig- nificantly to finish the season strong with teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State still on the schedule. Still, the PSU performance was one on which to build. "I felt like we found our groove a little bit," Patterson said. "Between the running game, passing game and our receivers making plays in the open space, just trusting in every- thing. … The O-line just completely blocking their ass off allowed me to make plays downfield." It was the first time all year every- thing seemed to click. "When you're driving the ball 60, 70 yards down the field, you get to the red zone, you're getting to the 1-yard line, you feel it," junior center Cesar Ruiz said. "You're moving the ball, you feel everything clicking … it feels good. "It's a momentum-starter for the offense. We'll build a lot of momen- tum and feed off of that." Despite the solid showing, U-M still ranked 80th nationally out of 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams af- ter seven games in total offense (391.6 yards per game) and 67th in scoring offense (29.0 points per contest). They were tied for 92nd in plays of 40 or more yards (five) and 75th in plays of 20 yards or more (31). — Chris Balas TWO WOLVERINES ENTER THE TRANSFER PORTAL In a sign of the times in college football, two more Michigan foot- ball players have entered the transfer portal. Redshirt freshman tight end Mustapha Muhammad announced his intentions Oct. 14 and junior de- fensive back J'Marick Woods did the same Oct. 21. Entering the portal does not guar- antee a player's departure — it just means other programs can contact them. It's unlikely, however, that ei- ther player returns to Michigan. In four appearances Woods had played only 49 defensive snaps for the Wolverines through seven games, while also contributing on special teams. He has one start in his ca- reer at U-M and has appeared in 27 games, notching 22 career tackles with 0.5 tackles for loss. The junior played in 12 games as a freshman, notching a career-high five stops against Ohio State and making his only start in the Outback Bowl against South Carolina. He appeared in 11 games and had 13 tackles last year. He also blocked a punt against Florida in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. This year, Woods recorded two OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Cl. WR 9 D.
