SECOND QUARTER: 14-14 Top Moment: With Notre Dame leading 14-7 and facing third-and- goal at the 1-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining, a hand-off to Armstrong into the middle was stoned by Hokies linebacker Ray- shard Ashby, with his helmet dis- lodging the football into the air where safety Divine Deablo grabbed it and scampered 98 yards for a touchdown. The extra point knotted the score at 14 with nine seconds left. Standout Performance: Notre Dame's defense forced two more three-and-outs to give it six in the first half while holding the Hokies to 85 to- tal yards (47 yards rushing on 17 car- ries and 4-of-17 passing for 38 yards). Stats: Notre Dame outgained Vir- ginia Tech in first half total yardage 243-85, but the 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown by the Hokies bal- anced it out. The Irish had 20 carries for 58 yards, and Book completed 14 of 25 passes for 185 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
