20 NOV. 9, 2019 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Book and a 26-yard screen pass to Armstrong right before the touch- down … With the Irish ahead 14-7 and Virginia Tech facing second- and-13 at Notre Dame's 38-yard line, a muffed exchange between Patter- son and wide receiver Tre Turner, coming across in motion, resulted in a fumble that junior rover Jere- miah Owusu-Koramoah recovered at the Hokies' 42-yard line … The Irish could not capitalize when Arm- strong's fumble resulted in the touch- down return by Virginia Tech. THIRD QUARTER: VIRGINIA TECH, 17-14 Top Moment: Virginia Tech took the second-half kickoff and drove 49 yards in seven plays before kicker Brian Johnson converted a 44-yard field goal with 11 minutes remain- ing in the quarter. A 28-yard slant to Hazelton and a 15-yard personal foul on senior defensive end Khalid Ka- reem were the top plays that helped the Hokies take their first lead of the game at 17-14. Standout Performance: Deablo built on his touchdown right before halftime by having a major hand in stopping both Notre Dame series. On the possession after the Hokies' field goal, Notre Dame drove to a first down at the Virginia Tech 33-yard line. On the next play when Book at- tempted to connect with Claypool on a post route into the end zone, Deablo came over from his safety position to pick off the pass at the 2-yard line at 7:39. On Notre Dame's second series, a third-and-15 pass to sophomore wide receiver Lawrence Keys III was stopped two yards short when De- ablo came up to make the stop, forc- ing a punt. Stats: Through three quarters, Notre Dame's 56 plays totaled 298 yards (221 passing and 77 rushing), while Virginia Tech's 54 plays net- ted 224 yards (139 passing and 85 rushing). Notes: Book had thrown only two interceptions the first seven games, but had two in the first three quarters versus the Hokies. FOURTH QUARTER: NOTRE DAME, 21-20 Top Moment: Book's seven-yard touchdown with 29 seconds re- maining concluded the methodical 87-yard drive in 18 plays, with the aforementioned clutch completions on fourth-and-three to Armstrong (five yards) and fourth-and-10 to Claypool (26 yards). Standout Performance: The whole Irish offense on the final drive. Stats: On the last march, Book was 6-of-14 passing for 63 yards and had three carries for 21 yards, each seven yards. Notes: On the first play of the fourth quarter, Patterson connected with Turner on a 50-yard pass on third-and-three to take the Hokies down to the 12-yard line … That 76- yard drive ended with a 25-yard field goal by Johnson to extend Virginia Tech's lead to 20-14 with 13:25 left … Notre Dame then began the drive fol- lowing the kickoff at the 1-yard line when return man Keys stepped back into the end zone and took a knee … Back-to-back personal fouls on Virginia Tech, plus a third penalty on the Hokies, helped Notre Dame get to the Virginia Tech 4-yard line, but a personal foul on a block by Arm- strong moved the Irish back to their 19-yard line … The drive ended with Doerer missing a 35-yard field goal attempt with 7:02 left. ✦ NOTRE DAME 21, VIRGINIA TECH 20 Nov. 2, 2019 ✦ Attendance: 77,622 Notre Dame Stadium ✦ South Bend, Ind.
