U-M improved to 1-1 against No. 13 seeds in the tournament, after losing to No. 13 seed Ohio in the second round of last year's tourney. • Junior guard Tim Hardaway Jr. cashed in 21 points against the Jackrabbits, representing his NCAA Tournament career high. His previous best was 15, scored on Duke in a thirdround contest in 2011. • Freshman forward Glenn Robinson III matched his career high in scoring with 21 against South Dakota State. He outscored SDSU 11-4 all on his own at one point, connecting on three three-pointers and a pair of free throws. • Sophomore guard Trey Burke managed only six points in Michigan's NCAA opener, marking the first time he remained in single figures since the 2011 Big Ten Tournament semifinals, in which he scored five. He has remained out of double figures in just five games over his two-year career. • Michigan's 78-53 victory over VCU in a third-round NCAA Tournament game gave the Wolverines 28 wins on the year. U-M head coach John Beilein thus pocketed the best win total for a single season in his long head-coaching career, topping the 27-9 mark his West Virginia squad achieved in 2006-07. • The Wolverines moved on to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 1993-94 season. That year, they made it to the Elite Eight before bowing to No. 1 seed and eventual national champion Arkansas, 76-68, at Reunion Arena in Dallas. • Michigan had never before met Virginia Commonwealth University on the basketball court. In beating the No. 5 seed VCU squad, U-M moved to 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament against No. 5 seeds. The Wolverines beat No. 5 Virginia, 102-65, in the 1989 regional finals, on the way to a national championship. • Burke recorded seven assists against VCU, breaking Michigan's single-season record established in 2010-11 by Darius Morris with 235. Burke's seven gave him 236 for the season. • Freshman center Mitch McGary started against VCU and put himself on the national stage, scoring a career-high 21 points and also grabbing a career-best 14 rebounds. He went 10 of 11 from the field, the 10 makes also establishing a new career high. • Michigan's thriller of an 87-85 win over Kansas on March 29 in the opening game of Sweet 16 action in Dallas pushed the Wolverines to 6-2 all time against the Jayhawks. Michigan and Kansas had never met before in the NCAA Tournament. • McGary set a career high with 25
